Writing a book

mm thats the problem the thing im stuck on for the specific story is the conflict, no matter how i twist and turn it, it comes back to, but why not just resolve whatever conflict i come up with in a sensible and normal way such as discussing the matter over a coffee lol

downside of slice of life i suppose
Slice of life is tough! Feel you

But I find that when we are in the actual situations, we do stupid things as well which screws things up

Couples that can't communicate are abundant in our society IRL, someone reading their story would yell "JUST TALK"

I find this very interesting, so write things as ridiculous as you want because there is bound to be someone out there that could relate

There are consumers that find others mistakes and dramas extremely interesting to read about, maybe to feel good about themselves or just to spice up their everyday life!

Books, comics and novels alike, are to entertain the consumer!

I hope you find the motivation and courage to write the story however you would like.

Failure means learning, and the more you learn the better you get
my other story thats collaborative writing (rp lol) is very much like that, just like throwing out stuff  and conflicts for the fun of it and it really makes to story go wrooom and im sure some do like that sorta stuff (i mean i do, thats why i write it sometimes), i think im just so picky with this story bc ive  had these characters for 10 years , but really i should just sit down and write whatever bc i can always scrap it haha
Yea, the start of my current project wasn't good! But I kept writing and it kind of started making more and more sense

You can also write certain scenes you want, since it will help you understand the story. Better than one could think, actually!

Pacing the story is probably what I struggle with the most, how much or how little one should write in one scene. Sometimes I write scenes that are not essential to the story in any way. I scrap those after having written a lot more :)

This is my first ever longer project, I have tried to start writing before but didn't go far!

I've found that as long as I have a goal in mind for the characters, the scenes kind of come naturally one after another. Some entirely unplanned but it works!

I think my goal is to find a balance between editing and writing progress.
does it help to set you goals for "I have to write at least this many words before I'm allowed to go back and edit"? this sometimes works for me on smaller projects
I kind of let the text 'sit' for at least 1-2 weeks before I look at it! I've found that I see it with fresh eyes at that point ^ - ^
that definitely, it's why you always should go over it again two months after you've finished the whole writing process

Writing a book is homework besides your homework tbh. That's the most relatable way I have gotten it put. It's hard af. It takes a shit ton of time and research. It's fun when it is easy and when you see results, but finishing a long-term project is aaaaaaaaa so hard. (I have still to get there.)

I don't like to go back and edit while I'm writing the first draft since you can easily loose the momentum, and for all you know, that is not how the chapter is going to look in the end either. Line edits goes after you're crystal on how the entire book is going to look because likely you will have to revise a lot.

I need to plot out what is going to happen to have a shot. It's what works for me because I can't just open a blank sheet and be like "hmm what's going to happen now." I need to work on the scene I'm going to write before I'm actually writing it. So a lot of pre-work which I don't have to do while I'm writing bc in the end you likely do need to know all of the same stuff anyways.

It *is* a lot of research! Though I find that I tend to grab knowledge from the back of my head kind of. If I am not entirely sure I google it quickly, and often it's correct! I am writing my first ever bigger project, and for the first time I kind of have a timeline as to how I'd like the story to go.

I'm not very used to revision, for actual homework when I was in school I revised once now and then, and if it was extremely important I revised it twice! I have heard that it's a must to revise, and I can say that it's not going to be my favorite part of this process.

I started this project as well as previously shorter projects on a blank page, I do have a vague feeling as to what I want it to be like or about, but I don't put too much pressure into the details at first. I have found that this way I get into the momentum that you mentioned!

I think this project is one that will steadily move forward, but absolutely not quickly. I don't really set deadlines for myself, due to being afraid of feeling like a failure. I feel that as long as I am actually writing regularly, it will be finished at some point! How do you feel about deadlines?

i wish i could get 400-500 words in an hour mygod. i always have ideas but i never have people to spar with, so my ideas strand very often. When i'm writing with friends (orpg's) I don't really have that problem cus there's constantly input, with every 'turn' there are new points to work with

currently i have a story i've been trying for about two years to write and I've started and scrapped it multiple times (obv kept every failure, cus it's still progress, just in a different way) but i really hope i can stop being so perfectionistic and realise while writing that is doesn't have to be perfect yet lmao

The biggest struggle in writing is to put your perfectionist to rest the first draft. I mentioned in another reply that I let the text rest 1-2 weeks, then I will see it with fresh eyes and wether it's acceptable, good or bad.

What I think you need is to just start, no matter how little or much! Don't even read it back, let it flow onto the blank page and then save and shut it down. When you then go back to it, read the last sentence and continue from that!

Maybe you are someone that needs to plan it out? Bulletpoints or a mindmap might be what you need. Writers journeys are all individual, and it's all about experimenting as to what works for you

I hope you find your way, and start writing! You have to start somewhere, as with all skills

Some storys can be quickly done, and others might be years in the making. I find that even just thinking about the story is a part of the writing process as much as the actual writing is! Don't think about what needs to be done in the future, rather focus on what can be done right now :)

Good luck to both of us, writing is no easy thing

I've been trying plotting and pantsing and a combination and i still haven't really found my method, i need to find my percentage on the scale i think hahahah, a process of trial and error

I think mapping out scenes is the hardest part for me, maybe? Like, I know the overarching story, know where i want my MC to end up and what she's learned, but i find it hard to figure out what makes a compelling scene and what is important to mention and what can be left out. and pacing, damn, pacing is hard to nail

That's absolutely amazing! There are not many writers out there that get to this point, so I hope you are as proud as I am of you!

Poetry is something I want to try out, but I think I need to read more poetry books before I even attempt it.

I also read in the other reply that your videos will be about your books, and I must say that I look forward to seeing them!!

Happy writing

Indeed, there isn't many people who publish their own book atm, like without any help and stuff like that, they have mostly like a publish place to get them out with a lot of help, u know?

that is great to read! i still need to edit the video, before I can get it out, happily c:
