Okay but ghetto? Really? Do people not know history? I've had a problem with the word ghetto being used the way that it is for quite some time but saying it's aave is plain ignorant.
its not ignorant . theres a certain way that 'ghetto' is used that originates w aave. doesnt necessarily mean that black people literally invented the word 'ghetto' . obv u can use the word ghetto in a way that is separate to aave, same w words like 'tea' or 'woke' or 'lit' like those words in and of themselves arent aave but they are depending on how u use them, its abt the context
Again, I think the American meaning of the word ghetto in itself is ignorant and problematic, for lack of better terms.
thats a whole separate issue tho n im not even denying that , i just dnt agree w the part where u say 'ghetto' isnt aave

i mean contemporary useage of the term does come from aave

the word just means ethnic neighborhood like i know youre gonna have different associations with the word as a jewish person and the history of nazi ghettos but the term means ethnic neighborhood.

kind of a really complicated and interesting word the way its evolved actually.
I understand that it has a different meaning in the US now and that language evolves and cannot and should not be policed, but I think that type of language is belittling and hurtful.

I didn't say it wasn't aave, I just don't think it's exclusive to aave or should be used only by African Americans.

lmao i made the same joke

some of those words i use only bc i shorten nearly every word i use,, it kinda comes as a natural habit as that's basically the norm in finland. i've had african-american friends and they never called me out on it so ig i'm good?? dunno

guess the severity depends on the person or the situation you're in-- like i'm trans, disabled and swedish-speaking (latter which is a thing some patriotic finnish folk frown upon due to historical events), and i don't get hurt when people use slurs (unless it is used in a derogatory way), i just tell 'em not to use them 'cause some people don't take 'em too well

I understand because of the stolen culture and the history of racist concept of "black people are uneducated" and for white people to turn around and copying it is wrong. But also there is a point where its adopted by the actual language and everyone uses it, you know?

African American Vernacular English?

For me it's beyond ignorant when people try to tell people what to say and what not to say. As people have said, there is a difference between usage and mocking. I'm not fully capable of getting the entire discussion, must be something I missed like what is the purpose of this thread?
Generally, but sadly not completely, AAVE is treated as a dialect of English, and should be equal to all the other varieties of English (sadly, some varieties, including AAVE has been looked down at over time, other notable varieties include Appalachian English).
It's significantly more complex than what people seems to assume in this thread, the history of AAVE and all that.. but like........................... I've been dizzy for 3 hours and I don't feel right so I should go further into this now especially as I must get up early tomorrow.
