btw guys depression isn't the only mental sickness that makes people unhappy... depression is yes something you can get over, but a lot of other mental sickness is something you live with forever

depression is a symptom of almost all other mental illnesses. idk what your point is here exactly.

No. You can choose to be content with what you have and accept the things you can't change, but happiness? Happiness is a privilege few are lucky enough to have.

i think people with this perspective need to redefine what happiness is. it's really a more simple thing than that and its not unattainable for anyone.

personally I have stopped striving to be 'happy' because I almost feel like its an unachievable concept. people put 'happiness' on this pedestal and it ends up becoming intimidating and revered. I strive for peace and content. I read something someone wrote once how they stopped trying to be happy, and instead tried to be less sad, and it completely changed the way I thought
yeah i agree, i don't think it's impossible but i think finding serenity is the step between sadness and happiness.

to people saying happiness is a choice, idk it just looked like people would only mention depression as an example, because you actually indeed can get over a depression, because yeah then hypothetical happiness is a "choice", if it was the only mental sickness that existed, it just isn't.

like are you really saying that for some people it's not possible to be happy? like what a world we'd be living in if there are really people who just CANNOT be happy. i don't think thats true.

this happens and it happens because becoming happy is hard work. you have to confront your trauma and things often feel worse before they feel better. people give up on the process during the hard part.
Hard and i also imagine it has to be scary at the same time.

what examples do you have of mental illnesses that make it so that a person literally cannot become happy.

For me being happy was always more of a short high that isn't something normal people have most of the time. Some people I knew had a shitty, uneventful life but still managed to be content and not die full of anger and resentment (some did though and I believe that is the greatest tragedy that can happen to a person).

also this is not necessarily accurate at all what youre saying about depression being something you get over. depression can be chronic. i still have depression. i've learned how to live with it and find joy in my life despite depression trying to hold me back.

I know? haha, but it's not either untrue that you can get over a depression.

im still wondering what mental illnesses cause a person to become unable to ever feel happiness?
