fanfiction is not literature at all, but it's fun. it's a creative outlet w borrowed characters, settings and plots.
i just fucking haaaaateeee it when ppl say they only read fanfics, like read some books. plz.

if you define literature as published books no, however there are different genres of fanfiction, some of it is a romance novel, something can be as sophisticated as 'literature'.
Often times classic literature is based on something in the bible or roman/greek mythology which would make it fanfiction of some kind.

I once read a House MD AU that was basically a 100k philosophical fiction (i'm so mad i didn't download it).

Printed books aren't always better, sure they go through some sort of quality control but twilight got published somehow so it doesn't always work.

yeah???
also fanfics are never literature. idk why y'all are so hellbent on thinking your harry styles fanfics are the same level as idk a book ???
there's nothing wrong w enjoying, writing and reading fanfics, but don't try to hype it up to some galaxy brain shit.
like that's the reason cassandra clare is still out there being a clam.

Not every fanfic is the same, sure the majority is slash or smut but not everything? It's an oversimplification to claim otherwise. Even Neil Gaiman said that many of his novels could be seen as fanfiction.

yeh i very much disagree with you
people spend years on writing and publishing fics sometimes, why is that any different from writers of printed novels ? not all of them are good, but it seems to me that you just haven't read the right stuff ahah

... lol

i've been reading fics for 10+ years.
that's exactly why i know you can't compare it w actual literature, because that's like comparing a car to a bike. they might both have wheels, but completely different ranges.
also fanfics aren't original. it's borrowed material.

yeah I agree with you

if you define literature as published books, then fanfiction isn't literature. if you consider literature as any collection of written work, then fanfiction is literature. if you define literature as "sophisticated" prose, drama, or poetry, then some fanfiction can be literature. 🤷‍♀️ if you think literature is better because it was published, that ignores how books like harry potter was rejected multiple times. if you think literature is better because it's original, that ignores that authors are inspired by other authors. look at the origin of romeo and juliet. this is famous literature with source material

i don't think it matters. when i read for leisure i read what i like, whether it's published or not. i'll save the literary elitism for the critics and academics, outside of uni that life ain't for me

yes you worded it so well !!
it's so hard for me to define literature because so many published books reaally shouldn't have been published and i've read a great deal of fanfics that are prize-worthy, so this whole argument is really pointless
