my lost media hunt is this one game i played as a kid where this family went on vacation with their flying car and it was a 3d side scrolling platformer and in one scene youre the mom in the supermarket dodging monkeys n stuff
i once found a knock off online version of it in a different language but all the cutscenes and cool bits were removed and it was just one level with horrible graphics

There's two silent movies that are believed to be lost that I really really really hope (but doubt) will be found.Ā

I mean there were a lot of factors involved.
The filmstock of the era was super unstable (it had a super cute habit of catching-the-fuck-on-fire)
There were moralistic groups that liked to set fire to subversive/social films (usually women's groups, church groups, and I think the American legion)
No one expected anyone to care, so they destroyed them to make space (you gotta think of how many silent films were just newsreels, so no one thought to archive them)
A lot of filmmakers at the time didn't have the means to store their prints for preservation, so they were at the mercy of film vaults, which sometimes didn't have the space (and also sometimes they just spontaneously caught on fire) - wealthier filmmakers and film stars tended to be able to hold onto prints better than others.
Also some of the movies, just like today, fucking SUCKED and no one gave a shit what happened to them.Ā

I could go on and on lol
it's one of my special interestsĀ
Plssss I love film
There's a cool documentary about a bunch of silent films they literally excavated (maybe still are excavating?) from a frozen pool-turned-ice-rink in Canada called Dawson City: Frozen Time.

lots of public libraries are offering streaming services like Hoopla and Kanopy with your library card, and I think both of them have this documentary. You should check your library website to see if yours has hoopla or kanopy!

I mean, I struggle to focus on them sometimes, too. I have to be truly ready to sit down and watch it, I also have to pause and process a lot.Ā
I def can see why folks who aren't already interested in that part of history wouldn't be into them
