plastic surgery is not empowering

I think that as long as you don't go too far with it and start looking like the Kardashians, everything should be fine. People have some really bad insecurities and I don't see anything wrong with them getting it fixed, which will later on result in self-love. Better that than battling with insecurity throughout your whole life.

hm, i do feel one should practice what they preach, if what they preach is self-love
You feel people should love how they were made and not make any changes?
i feel that if people preach self-love (love how they were made and not make any changes) then plastic surgery isn't that, and you can't preach self-love, or at least, not authentically
With that point of view, then it goes along with people who dye their hair, shave, tan, paint their nails can't preach self-love. This wasn't the way they were made.

those are usually temporary things, that don't necessarily 'hide' what you already have. if you get plastic surgery you intend on hiding / altering that thing forever.

It depends on what we here define as plastic surgery, for instance sex change/correction (whatever is the most appropriate term to use) is defined by some (or all??) as plastic surgery because it isn't really physically needed in order to be able to live and all that, regardless I would categorise that as something slightly outside of the "my nose is too big", but I think if people do it for themselves to feel better about themselves, why shouldn't they be allowed to advocate self-love? You should be allowed to do what's right for you to feel good about yourself without being any less appropriate to tell others they should love themselves, after all - self-love is highly individual and whatever is needed for someone to be able to love themselves is not really our business to judge.

when i said plastic surgery i meant like nose jobs or boob jobs and that kind of stuff but ofc sex change is often considered a plastic surgery which is tricky cause a lot of people don't see it as cosmetic, so i agree w you on that point.

i guess it all boils down to what we define as self-love, but the point i want to make is that we can't market plastic surgery as something empowering and sell it to kids bc it's not empowering it's just a predatory industry trying to get your money.

I think I get why this swayed away from the point you were making. You're talking about it from the perspective of people earning tons of money from it, they're actively telling society that plastic surgery will take insecurities away. And while changing some details could reduce insecurity, it's different if you're generally an insecure person, personality wise. And people getting those messages from the people earning money from it might not be able to tell the difference and will be caught in a loop feeling worse every time because they're still insecure.

It's not about people changing something about themselves to feel more like themselves, it's about how everyone is told how you will become greater and better (empowering) if you pay the money and go under the knife, when at best it only reduces anxiety about a certain thing or two, and at worst you'll lose all your money to plastic surgery addiction.

I see what you mean bc if you really “loved” everything about yourself then why would you change anything with surgery lol

but that aside I’m glad it exists I like knowing there’s an option to change if I wanna

My sisters been dying her hair blonde since she was 15, even our family doesn't remember what her natural shade is. Not all procedures last forever: Lip fillers, botox, liposuction, corrective eye surgery.

I feel plastic surgery and each individual persons reasons for getting it is too complex and broad to put them in the same pot.

agreed
i don't think it's wrong to get plastic surgery at all, but you can't call it something it isn't. plastic surgery is giving in to your insecurities/social pressure, not loving yourself. i think you can still try to love yourself if you have plastic surgery, but you shouldn't be acting as an example for others or claiming that plastic surgery is self love...
