How to be thrifting Queen (or king!) 7/29 (by Account deleted)

a hugely bullet point based article

& inspired by the lovely Bernie.

There are 2 type of people in the world; people who wrinkle their nose up at smelly hand-me-downs and people who cherish wearing other people's old clothes. The truth is there are so, so many benefits of shopping for clothing second hand and by the end of this article I want to make sure there's only one type of person in the world (or the population of VP, whatever. I can convert the other seven billion later)!

Advantages:

  • Naturally, as a wage-less teenager, price is something I'm very conscious about. There's nothing more depressing than walking into your favourite high street shop and realising that everything is WAY out of your price range. Even if mainstream fashion is something inside your budget there's no denying a bargain is always nice and, let me tell you, thrift shopping is full of wonderful bargains!
  • Some shops like Goodwill,Oxfam, British Heart Foundation etc give a percentage of money earned from selling clothes to their specific charity. Hence why thrift shops are called charity shops in some places!
  • Because there's such a wide variety of shops and markets to look around in you'll never get bored and you'll rarely find the same item twice.
  • You'll also be much more subject to unique and interesting one-off finds to broaden your fashion horizons. My favourite thing about shopping in second hand places is that I get to wear completely rad things that no one else has and create my own look, as weird and 90's as it may be!
  • If you have a creative soul then thrift shops are perfect for you as you can find all manner of fabrics to fuel your crafty fire. This may also appeal to the future fashion designers among you, as there's always something you can cut up and put your own stamp on - making your clothes even more unique.
  • You can also find all manner of gorgeous nick-nacks to spruce up your bedroom!

Disadvantages:

  • NONE!
  • Ok, ok, I'm being biased. The only disadvantage I can think of is that you'll often have to trawl through piles of piles of unwanted clothes before you find what you're looking for. However that's something you have to do in mainstream shops anyway.
  • Oh, also the clothes MAY smell a tiny bit but that can be sorted out by a few runs in the washing machine and usually thrift shops wash all the clothes that come into them before they sell them.
If you're already a keen thrifter then applause for you! Though I'm sure you, and your recently converted thrifting buddies, will still appreciate some tips on how to bag the best finds. So luckily for you I made yet another dorky gif!

I'd be really interested in hearing all your thrifting tips, experiences and favourite finds so please comment them below and I'll take a peek at them all!:)

Nice work Milla! I really, really enjoyed reading this. The pictures and gifs to go along with it are fantastic, too! I went to one once, not sure of the name, but I got a pair of jean shorts there that I fell in love with and wore them until they were no longer wearable. It really is true that you can make good finds at thrift/charity shops.:|
Oh, and lovely layout Daisy!;)

In the charity shops over here they usually bunch together clothes in parts like tops on one rail, trousers on another, etc. And also by size, so you don't have to rummage, find something you like and oh no it's not my size.
Although, sometimes their sizing can be wrong (I bought a pair of shorts and they were a size too big, they said it was in my size) Oh well!
Also, books are good to find there too :d
