Phantasmagoria Review |
Hi all, This is Concertsrule speaking. I have finished playing the entirety of Sierra On-Line's "Phantasmagoria" and I have many thoughts! Firstly, Initially I had wanted to emulate it on my own but since the game came on 7 discs, yes 7 s-e-v-e-n, It was impossible for me to do so with the tools I have available. So I looked it up on steam, It's there so I bought it. (If you are my friend on here you likely would've already seen me say this in a startalk) On to the actual review, Phantasmagoria is the first proper horror game made by Sierra On-Line. Like most of their games it was created by "Master Storyteller" Roberta Williams and like most of her games it has plenty of "Moon Logic" This game sucks, Everyone that you see talking about it goes "Did phantasmagoria go too far?!" because of the gore and "overt sexuality" and I can understand it to a certain point but, are we joking around here? Yes there is a bit of special effects gore but the way people talked about it I thought it was going to be chock full of needless violence and blood and guts and what have you. It is not! Most of the really bloody stuff is near the end of the game and because of the compression of the Full Motion Video (FMV) you can't see it very clearly at all. I'll get ahead of this and say, yes I think this game was revolting, disturbing and overall inappropriate during the time of its release but from a modern perspective it just.. isn't. The controls are, at a glance, pretty similar to other adventure games from Sierra but, well, with one caveat. You can't switch between multiple interaction types. So, for example, I needed to use the matchbook to go into a dark cellar. I tried using the matchbook on the opening of the cellar but that didn't work so I assumed I needed to find a candle of some sort to light to take down with me. WRONG! Because there is no "Use" interaction mode you have to take the matchbook and put it in Adrienne's hand. Maybe someone would have thought of that but I really didn't until I looked it up and it says "Use the matches to traverse the cellar" so that's how I found that out. Amazing game design. I think the story is interesting and the puzzles were alright, not too stupidly difficult like certain other Sierra games. (koff) King's Quest (koff) but for $10 USD it was not worth it. Sierra On-Line was a pioneer of video games, but this just isn't it. This game is not good and kind of wish i could get a refund on steam. -CR P.S. The main character, Adrienne, pisses me off constantly. Especially during the chase sequence she just.. stands there for a good second before doing the action you want. I think this is a measure to not make the FMV too jarring but it is INFURIATING! My throat hurts from screaming at my screen for her to FUCKING MOVE. |
