Face Off: The Series (by Account deleted)

Happy Sunday guys! :)

Hailee here, bringing you a new article about a show that I’ve been binge watching for awhile now! I’ve always been super interested in the concept of FX makeup so when I found out that there was a show where contestants competed using prosthetics I fell in love.

My brother was the one who discovered Face Off accidentally one-night flipping channels late one night, and we binged watched the entire season and had been watching the seasons ever since. Face off is currently in its 11th season (with a new episode airing each Tuesday), and totals to 126 episodes and counting. The 11th season is slightly different since it is all returning contestants and is an All-Star season. The contestants have been matched in pairs, and each week compete as pairs. This means that if they win, they win as a team, and vice-versa they lose and get eliminated as a team.

The reality television game show is hosted by McKenzie Westmore and has a panel of amazing artists as the judges. Although, on some occasions, the show may have guest judges. The re-occurring judges are Academy Award-winning makeup artist Ve Neill (The Hunger Games, Beetlejuice), television and film makeup artist Glenn Hetrick (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and as of season 3, creature and concept artist Neville Page (Avatar, Cloverfield).

Each week, the contestants are faced with a “spotlight challenge.” They must create a full makeup character that showcases off their talents. They are given a theme and then must use their creativity to create a look within three days (On the rare occasion, they are given two days).

On the first day of the competition, the contestant is given around 5 hours to start sculpting their work, if they get ahead, they can start the molding process. The second day consists of around 10 hours where they are supposed to finish the molding process. Since things don’t always go as planned, they must finish everything on the third day which is only around 4 hours. During the 4-hour period, about half-way, the models arrive, and they must begin the application process. The contestant then gets something called “last looks,” it is an hour where they can put the final touches on before going to the judges.

Some weeks, they are also given a “foundation challenge” which is a smaller challenge, and the winner is rewarded with some reward. The reward can range from immunity from elimination, cash prizes, or even getting the first choice of theme they want to do.

What I love the most about this show is, getting to see the finished product and watching the application process and how it gets done. I’m a curious person and have always been intrigued on how things get done. So this show for me is pure bliss. I love when they get to do a horror-themed makeup because they are usually so freaky and so cool.

I highly suggest that if you have the time, you check out an episode of this show. If not, you can always find loads of pictures online to see some of the work that gets done while on the show! Let me know if you’ve ever seen the show, or even if you have a thing for FX makeup, I hope you guys enjoyed this article and once again thanks to Hungry for the excellent layout!

I've been watching since season 1, but stopped on season 8, I think.. might try to get back into it this year. as a stylist/mua, this show really caught my eye when it first started and actually got me to branch out from beauty makeup to sfx (though I'm only trained for beauty makeup, so all my sfx works have been experimental and referenced techniques used on the show). tbh I'm much more interested in sfx since then. I love completely transforming people (and myself when I don't have a willing test subject lol) it's a lot of fun. I'm no good with creating larger prosthetics, but I've become pretty confident in my ability to make smaller pieces.. for example, I've done cuts, gashes, open wounds, ripped/torn/hanging skin, covered/missing eyes, claws and finger extensions, and horns.
