Chinese New Year (by Private)

Chinese New Year, sometimes called Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar; equivalent to January 1st in the western world. It runs for a total of fifteen days and starts on the first day of the Chinese calendar (usually late January or early February in Gregorian calendar). Traditionally, on New Year’s Eve, offerings are made and the family gathers for a large feast. Each day thereafter for the fifteen days, it is tradition to either host or go to a different house for dinner with family and friends. The first day is to pay respects the eldest of the family, such as great grandparents or grandparents.

One of the most popular traditions is the tradition of giving Red Envelopes; which symbolize luck and prosperity. Elders usually put any amount of money inside and give it to the young, unmarried ones.

Other Fun Facts and Traditions
-2013 is the year of the snake.
-On New Year’s day, you should not wash your hair. This is because washing your hair can symbolize washing your wealth away.
-Crying on New Year's day means crying for the entire year.
-You should not clean the house on New Year's day or you're sweeping your luck away.
-Chinese New Year’s started because of a monster called Nian; who would eat crops as well as humans. Wearing red would scare the monster away and thus many wear red on New Year. The tradition of firecrackers also came from this; firecrackers scared the Nian away.

We wish all those celebrating Chinese New Year happiness, luck, success, and prosperity!
