Tattoos have been a form of self-expression and art for years upon years by now. Although having a parent’s permission is ideal for minors, once you turn 18, you are more than welcome to go all out if you’d like! However, everyone knows that with an amazing design, comes hours of sitting still in a chair, dealing with the pain of the needle, and knowing the aftercare for your new marking!
No matter where you get your design done at, there are always going to be risks that will follow you potentially. From the salon or even from a trusted source that’s outside of a tattoo parlor, there are a few general health precautions you should keep in mind, including skin rashes (these can occur even years after the finished design) and bloodborne diseases (Tetanus, Hep B, Hep C, etc). Generally, most of these infections and rashes can be treated with both prescribed medications and some OTC.
If you’re planning or thinking of getting your first tattoo, keep in mind that (obviously) the tattoo will be a part of you for quite some time. You can always have surgery to remove the design or have a newer or different tattoo cover the original, but try to plan it all correctly the first time! Make sure to call and ask around for different estimates and different artists around your area, or even outside if you’re willing to make the travel! Ask as many questions as you need to so you can be confident with your artist and your ideas.
Surprisingly, you don’t have to do much at all for the aftercare of your fresh ink! The human body is amazing with healing itself, because a tattoo is just another flesh wound. Allow it some time with lots of air and you will be fine! If you want some definite tips, be sure to avoid excessive sun exposure (looking at suntanning and sunburns), and avoid swimming until your tattoo is healed completely. Also if you prefer, you can apply some Aquaphor and remember that when showering and drying, to pat the skin dry and to wash around the fresh ink. Some tattoos take up to a single week to heal, and some may take up to two, so it all just depends. Also, avoid scratching your tattoo when it begins itching and do not peel the scabs or pick at them either. Other than these small tips, just relax and take care of yourself per usual!
