T H A N K S G I V I N G T R A D I T I O N S As you may know, many Americans in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth of November each year. Most families follow traditions done in the first ever celebrated Thanksgiving, but many also celebrate their own traditions. Here are some traditions celebrated on this holiday. 1. Traveling Thanksgivings all about spending time with your family and many people from far places all come by train, bus, car, or even plane to be with their loved ones. It is even one of the biggest travel days of the entire year. 2. The Food Many families often eat the same traditional foods that are iconic in the Thanksgiving tradition such as turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn, fish, and cranberry sauce. For dessert families often settle for pie usually pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, and or apple. 3. Wishbone A popular tradition is breaking a turkey's wishbone attached to the breast part of the turkey. Before you break this bone, however, you have to make a wish. Sometimes two people hold the end of the bone and make a wish then pull and whoever ends up with the larger part wish will come true. 4. Parade Many families watch New York City's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on television or in person. The parade consists of marching bands floats, performances, and songs by Broadway musicals and gigantic helium balloons. 5. Helping the less fortunate Some people take Thanksgiving as the chance to help the less fortunate and volunteer to serve food in homeless shelters and others choose to donate or participate in canned food drives.
