Introduction to: Steampunk (by Account deleted)

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery, though it has also been associated with "Cyberpunk".

Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power is the norm or even, in fantasy worlds too.
For me personally, my favourite style has always been the Victorian style. I've always described it as somewhat 'Hardcore Elegance'. Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century.

It's beginnings are unknown, having been believed to have been inspired by the works of likes of H.G Wells, Jules Verne, Mary Shelley, Mervyn Peake and Michael Moorcock - to name a few.
It has been found in books, comics and fine art that all pinpoint to the introduction of the genre in the early-mid 20th Century.
However, the term itself was not coined until the late 1980s as a variant of Cyberpunk, by science fiction author, K.W Jeter. The term was applied to describe the works of: himself (Morlock Night/Infernal Devices), Tim Powers (Anubis Gates and James Blaylock (Hounculus) however, they gave little thought to it and never intended for it to grow as large as it did.

Now, Steampunk has grown into a fully fleshed community and now influences our entertainment. One major way in which Steampunk has expanded is through their worldwide events and conventions held with events such as Steamcon, the Steampunk World's Fair and San Diego Comic-Con, to name a few.

Some notable mentions of Steampunk and influences in Pop culture include Doctor Who, Bioshock Infinite, Dishonoured, World of Warcraft, Castle in the Sky and Borderlands 2.
Hey everyone, it's Lydia!
This week I wanted to show you the world of Steampunk, a world that I have always loved. From having a whole Pinterest board dedicated to it to collecting the Steampunk clothes on VP - I'm obsessed!

The whole idea of the world is so unique to me. The perfect blend of old meets new. It's always sparked my interest as I'm a massive history buff. It has so much elegance to it, and it's so beautiful to look at, in such an unconventional way.

I have many fashion styles that I love, but this is one of my ultimates. I wish it was something that could be worn every day. Aaah - I just love it, haha. I hope that you guys all love it, too, by the end of this.

I hope that you all enjoy this article!

In the gallery, click the images to view bigger versions! Here, I have listed some of my favourite examples of Steampunk fashions and items. One of my favourites is the violin. It's my favourite instrument and seeing it in Steampunk! I fangirled, I'm not gonna lie. To note, as well, is the red outfit on the end of the first row is a Steampunked Red Riding Hood.

Fangirling over. Time to introduce you all to the world of Steampunk!

Could you explain to me how WoW has anything to do with steampunk tho, i dont understand that
@Targaryen
Sourced from Wikipedia:
"Many steampunk themes can be found within World of Warcraft (2004), particularly the Gnome race. Many of the items which can be created via the Engineering profession are of a steampunk nature and also named in a similar fashion."

It's one that was influenced by Steampunk but not necessarily Steampunk. It's why the wording is so awkward @: 'Some notable mentions of Steampunk and influences in Pop culture' as I didn't know how to word it but still mention about influences xD

ah yes of course !! how did i not think of that
i love that part of the game tbh

Oh shoot! Just realised you already put that cyberpunk and steampunk came from literature. (I couldn't scroll that box on the right for some reason)

i used to think steampunk and cyberpunk were really similar but then I actually got into cyberpunk and now I don't know why I thought they were so similar 😅 Have you heard of dieselpunk? I really like that too - it's a bit more casual and has a more mechanic look (think Disney's Atlantis). It's vaguely similar to steampunk though. They both originated from sci-fi literature too, as did cyberpunk :)
