The Curse of the Mary Sue (by Jasmine )

A Mary Sue (or Marty Stu) is a horrific character that is often found lurking amongst fanfictions and on some occasions, actual books...

Basically, A Mary Sue or Marty Stu is a character that writer's often base on themselves, which is a big mistake. Mainly because the writer doesn't want to point out their flaws, but make themselves a picture perfect, (usually immortal) person who everybody loves.

Let me give you an example.

Mary Sue was happy with her life. She was gorgeous, talented and a strong woman. She was perfect. (Of course, she would probably never admit that out loud).

She ran a tanned hand through her beautiful long wavy brown hair, smiling, showing off all of her perfect, straight white teeth, her bright blue eyes shining like diamonds.

She worked in a fancy boutique in the mall, which paid very well. Everyone who was in the shop and caught sight of her were awe struck by her beauty.

She was walking around another shop when she noticed two guys staring at perfume.

"Is everything alright?" she asked politely, they both looked up and met her gorgeous eyes.

"Um, yeah, urm, we're just looking for perfume for our girlfriends." one of them said, he had black hair that was messily settled on his head, icy blue eyes and pale skin. "I'm Jack." he said. The other guy instantly felt jealousy spread over him, despite only knowing the girl for a matter of seconds.

"And I'm Oliver." he said, running a hand through his blonde hair.

"I'm Mary Sue." said Mary Sue, smiling perfectly.

There was a feeling spreading over each of the guy's hearts. Love.

"Wait! Stop!" Jack said, staring up.

"Yeah, aren't we supposed to have girlfriends, as you just said?" Oliver asked, looking up like Jack did. Jack nodded in response to Oliver's question.

Well, in most Mary Sue stories, by now you have both forgotten about your girlfriends and have fallen in love with perfect little Mary 'ere.

"Ohhhh." the men said in unison, turning back to the masterpiece that was Mary Sue.

"Anyway, our girlfriends don't matter now. You're here!" Oliver said. They both took Mary Sue by one hand and led her out of the boutique, despite her shift not being over, but Mary Sue would get it back anyway because her boss man had a huge crush on her, like everyone does.

Suddenly, Mary Sue and Oliver are at a beach with no explanation as to how they got there, why they went there and also, where Jack is, who seems to be forgotten by now.

Oliver scooped Mary Sue up and dumped her in the sea, laughing as she squealed.

"I love you Oliver!" Mary Sue said.

"I love you Mary Sue!" Oliver mimicked her, before pulling out a small box that had obviously been in his pocket all day.

"Will you marry me?" he asked, even though they had only just met. He got down on one knee and opening the box that contained a beautiful diamond ring.

Mary Sue's eyes widened.

"Yes!" she screamed, and they lived happily ever after.

Okay, that killed me to write. But there is my article for this week, I hoped you found it satisfying.

Bye for now,

Jasmine.

the example is a little too long for my liking in comparison to the rest, I think some advice on "how to avoid making your character end up as a mary sue" or doing a little quiz about Is Your Character A Mary Sue would've been a nice addition, the example was amusing to read though!

Thank you. :)
