Ballet and theatre have always been something that I have enjoyed watching. I can remember going to London with my parents when I was about six or seven years old and going to see Annie and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and there was always something magical about it. My heart starts to fill up with joy and it makes me want to cry because I am amazed at the pure talent that the people I'm watching have got.
Now if I told you about all of my favourites then I would probably win the award the longest article in history so I will tell you about one of my favourite musicals and one of my favourite ballets.
I hope you enjoy this article and please suggest musicals or ballets you think I might like in the comments and also let me know what your favourite ballets and musicals are.
In October last year me and my parents went to London for the weekend along with my grandparents. We had been planning this trip for a long time as in 2013 I went to London with school and I said from the day I got back that I wanted to go back. We were meant to go for my birthday but decided that going near my mums birthday would be a better idea as my granddads shifts were more suited to that time.
When ever we go to London we always, always make sure that we go and see a show and this time around we ended up going to see Billy Elliot. Now at first I wasn't very excited about going, I had seen the films a few years before and had a vague memory of the story but I wasn't that interested.
When the nigh to go and see the show I was pleasantly surprised. Everything about the entire show was amazing. The boy who played Billy the night we went to see it blew my mind, his talent was incredible. Everything about it was. The music was fantastic, the acting was fantastic I was just in shock, especially since I was expecting not to be a fan of it.
For those of you who might not know anything about Billy Elliot here's a little description:
A young boy named Billy lived in a miners village in the North of England with his dad older Brother. The miners were currently on strike. Billy attends boxing classes and one day he is late so his coach makes him stay behind and then when Billy is done his coach leaves, asking Billy to give the keys to the woman who ran the next class. A dance class. Billy attempted to give her the keys but she wouldn't have it and then suggest to him about coming back the next week. The rest of the musical follows Billy and his journey to attending the royal ballet school as well as following the journey of the rest of his family and village.
My favourite song comes at the end of the musical and it honestly makes me go cold. I have put the YouTube video below, I hope you will also like it. I couldn't find the actual clip so I apologize for that. I don't know if you will get the full effect without the video but all the miners step onto a lift and all the lights go out and all you can see is the lights on their
heads. It is amazing.
Matthew Bourne's version of Swan Lake is and will always be my favourite version of Swan Lake. It has been something that I have loved watching, both at home and at the theatre. I first watched on TV one Saturday night with my parents when I was about six or seven years old and then not much longer after that we went to see it in London.
This version is incredibly different to the Swan Lake that you know as this is a ballet version and the swans are also male. The film focuses on the life of a prince who is fighting for his mothers attention but she doesn't care. Then the swan comes along and his mother adores him so the prince tries to be like this swan and the rest focuses on the relationship between the prince and the swan and it is honestly breath taking. It may not be for some people because there is no talking what so ever but it is just magical and the emotions you get when watching is amazing. I have now seen this twice in the theatre and have watched it many, many times at home. It amazes me that when you see it live, you can hear the little noises the swans make on the floor as they dance and it almost sounds like hissing. I would love to see it live again.
I haven't watched too many other ballets so if you have any you like, let me know and I might give them a watch. I have also put some pictures and a video below for you.
