 ReportTop 10 Eurovision 2019
My Personal Top 10 Eurovision 2019
I wanted to state in advance of further reading that the first time I listened to these songs it was the live performances from the Semi Finals they participated in, in the order of their appearance on stage, and thus something might be biased from that.
10. Denmark
First, I thought the song was a very stereotypical Danish entry. That's not wrong, it is. However, that's not a negative thing. It is a feel-good and 'radio friendly' song. That's not enough to win my heart, and for the first minute or so the song wasn't anything that was for me worthy a top 10. But suddenly, the element that was enough to convince me - she started singing in French, and then Danish, and I think there is a sentence in German there as well. I like that, I really love that. Songs in other languages than English, that's 10/10. The performance is adorable, it is positive, and it manages to make me happy.

9. Norway
In Norwegian, I describe this song as "ekstremt harry" which roughly translates to "extremely tacky*". First and foremost, the song gives me flashbacks to the kind of awkward Norwegian entry of 1980, those who knows know. I'm wholly incapable of letting that kind of feeling or whatever go. This entry probably appeals to more and wider audiences than the 1980 one, though. Secondly, it leaves me somehow without words. It's absurd, it's bizarre. What in the hell is the combination, why is it like this, what is happening, why.. what? I had to listen to it several times to find it appealing, however it is still incomprehensible to me that it won the televote. It's a guilty pleasures, and they normally don't win (tb to Ukraine 2007).

8. The Netherlands
I considered being lazy regarding this song and urge people to look at my top 10 Eurovision winners of this decade, but I'll try to write something completely different to the lazy people out there. The song is well composed, Duncan is obviously fully capable of singing. The performance is a bit dull. And it's unfortunately one of those ballads that haunt Eurovision and somehow managed to do way too good. I don't want Eurovision to be fully transformed into a boring show consisting of only ballads for 3 hours straight and then the safest card wins. However, the song is not as bad as I feared, the lyrics are pretty clever. Prior to listening to the entries I feared it was an undeserved win (it kind of is) but it's just okay. There have been several worse winners the last 10 years.

7. Armenia
I don't understand how it didn't reach the grand final. I quite like the song, it appealed to me. It was easily one of the best songs of the second semi final, which was an extremely overpowered/stacked semi final. I don't know how to elaborate here, I just like it. It is not like the questionable 2011 entry, at least.

6.  France
This song grew on me. I was disappointed beyond words when I heard France had sent an entry in English + French. I want more diversity language-wise in Eurovision, and normally you can count on France to not send something in English, thus guaranteeing that at least two languages appear in the competition. However, I like the message in the lyrics, I enjoy the performance - I'm impressed by the dancers despite not being the kind of guy who cares about that. The languages are nicely combined. I would've preferred more French. It's alright.

5. Portugal
Yes to whatever this is! I love the concept. I must say I hate when people beg for diversity in Eurovision, musical-wise at least, and then - when it finally appears the JURY punishes it (the people who allegedly know music!!) Outrageous. The song captivates me from start to end. I can't understand how people are capable of making something like this, I am amazed. How do their brains function? Truly remarkable. I love it, I don't understand it, but I genuinely love it.

4. Iceland
This is one of the types of music I listen to outside Eurovision. For me, this is probably most appealing songs lyrics-wise and musically. So why isn't it my winner this year? The performance matters as well. And the scene show... that's nothing for me at all. Call me a prude or whatever, for me this is too much. Thus, Iceland falls from being the best to being top 5. The performance isn't bad, per se, it does however make me uncomfortable as all overly sexual performances do. It always result in me sitting there like naah fam, I don't like this. I don't like being uncomfortable.

3. Italy
Big, big, big bias. Ever since Italy returned to the competition in 2011, the entries have probably averaged about 4th on my rankings. The song is considerably different from the vast majority of the entries, which obviously is a massive plus. I'm obviously thrilled the song is not in English. I'm also quite proud I understand parts of the lyrics without having to check it up. The entry is overall very decent, but it is no Italy 2015 (just saying). Adequate. Acceptable. I'll allow it.

2. Spain
Prepare to be surprised. Normally, I despise whatever kind of thing Spain decides is a good idea to send (and torture us with) to the biggest event of the year. So far this century, I have only found four of the entries acceptable - including this. The song might seem a bit 'cheap' and simple to people, probably as it sounds like literally every happy song in Spanish. But I like that, I like when countries do this. I don't care if it's simple, it makes me happy and I enjoy listening to it. It was a much needed happy song in a year filled with tragedy. It is 3 minutes of Miki and his dancers seemingly having a lot of fun on stage and Eurovision needs that.

1. Switzerland
Speaking of big pluses... It might seem absurd that I rank this song as the best song after complaining about the lack of non-English Eurovision entries. I'm completely fine with songs being in English, as long as other languages are present. Upon listening to this  year's entries, I immediately fell for this. This song was a much needed, and wanted song. It was necessary to have something that was following a formula, easy to remember, and just plain enjoyable (imo). Normally I don't award songs like this the first place, I generally don't "feel" them. However, I haven't got a single negative comment about this song, or even the performance. I am impressed. It is hands down the best Swiss entry in forever.
